When an author wants to get traditionally published, they need to send queries to agents in hopes that one will agree to take the book on and submit it to publishers.
Naturally, agreeing to rep a book is a big commitment, so agents have to really love it before they’ll agree. The net result is that the query process is sort of like dating to find The One. You query, and get rejected, dozens of times.
Agents are to authors as authors are to characters. They appear to have ultimate, arbitrary power over our fate, but actually they are limited on their end by all sorts of factors.
