It’s the fears, shame, insecurities and lack of perspective.
I can’t even say I’m worse off physically now, because I used to get migraines. And hormonal stuff that young girls have to go through! But I know that’s not the same for everyone.
Anyway … I teach kids, and I see what they go through, which is why this quote came to mind from a novel of hers that I read years ago.
